Leading Across Campus: Different Leadership Roles with a Shared Purpose

Many careers in higher education begin with a love of teaching, mentoring students, and conducting research. The psychology professors presenting this symposium began in the same academic role and have now spent between 12 and 24 years at their institution. Over time, they have taken on university leadership positions that allow them to support students in new ways.

Although their responsibilities have changed, their commitment to student success has remained constant. This symposium will explore how that commitment shapes different leadership roles and reaches students both inside and outside the classroom. Two recurring themes are the importance of belonging and the communities students find across the university.

Drawing on their experiences, the presenters will describe how collaboration across campus has strengthened opportunities for student belonging, engagement, and success. They will share strategies for faculty members already in leadership roles and those considering a move into university administration.
