Joining the Conversation: Empowering Fathers to Engage in Sex Education

Today’s generation of fathers is stepping into parenting in unprecedented ways, taking on more active, emotionally engaged roles than previous generations. Research confirms that this increased involvement serves as a powerful protective factor for youth mental health and well-being. Yet, sexual and relationship health remains an area where fathers are less engaged and often unsure of their role. Extending involved fatherhood into this domain is critical. This talk will describe our team’s research on father and teen perspectives on family communication about sex and relationships and our translation of this learning into an online intervention to help fathers join the conversation as supportive partners and foster healthy teen relationships. The presentation will also include tips for fathers, mothers, and educators to engage fathers in talking with their teens and supporting their healthy relationships.
