Are you looking for a dynamic job working with children, adolescents, and families? If yes, then this session is for you.

The need for School Psychologists and other school mental health professionals is greater than ever before as more children and adolescents require mental health services. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) (2011), at any one time, approximately three million children in America ages 9 to 17 have a severe emotional impairment.

A career as a school-based mental health professional allows endless opportunities to serve children and adolescents and provide them access to supports that they may not otherwise receive due to barriers such as financial cost, transportation, scheduling conflicts, and fragmentation of services. In this symposium, participants will learn about the dynamic role that school mental health professionals can perform and the career and financial benefit of working in schools.

Specifically, attendees will learn about the role of a school mental health professional, how to become a school mental health professional including what training one receives, and considerations for selecting a graduate program. Those attending will have ample time to ask questions.

A case study will also be presented to demonstrate the critical role the school mental professional performs in the day-to-day operations in school.
